Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) is back in the news over recovery of construction license fees that are due but this time the amount Rs 20 crore and the project is that of a four lane flyover project connecting Shantinagar to Mormugao Port Trust (MPT).

Several activists and political leaders have now insisted that the MMC immediately put in efforts to recover the huge outstanding fees from the flyover project.

According to sources, concerned public and spirited citizens had submitted a memorandum in this regard to the then MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik in the month of May. The memorandum demanded that Mormugao Council initiate steps to recover due construction license fee of around 20 crore. Upon failure to clear the fee, the citizens had demanded that a stop work order be issued for the project.

When contacted, MMC Chief Officer Angelo Fernandes said, “We have been writing to them and our correspondence is going on. It has not come to a logical end. My stand is that they have to pay all the due to this municipality as there is no exemption to this type of central government projects. The amount is in crores. We have also sent them show cause notices and the process is going on.”

However, Convenor of NGO Goa First Parshuram Sonurlekar, who was one of the persons to submit a memorandum to Mormugao Council, said that MMC must take active steps to recover the amount before the project is completed.

“The Flyover project from Varunapuri to MPT is almost complete and is 90 per cent ready. Once the project is completed in a few days, the company carrying out this construction will disappear from Goa and MMC Will have no chance to recover anything. The money is public money and has to be recovered before the project is completed,” said Parshuram Sonurlekar.

Let Urban Minister decide matter, says Vasco MLA on recovery of funds

VASCO: Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida has said that it was important that law be same for everyone and the due amount be recovered from the central government funded project.

“Law must be the same for everyone. We are lucky that we have Milind Naik as an urban development minister in Vasco and he is the best person who can decide on this issue,” said Carlos.

Outstanding amount has to be recovered: Jose Philip

VASCO: Former Minister Jose Philip D’Souza has said that at a time when Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) was struggling for funds, a huge amount of outstanding fee had to be recovered.
“I had inquired with the chief officer and he informed me that the an amount of around Rs 20 crore was due from a central government flyover project despite sending notices. This is public money and very important to be recovered as MMC itself is struggling for funds despite being an A class municipality. It is of utmost importance that MMC recover this outstanding immediately as law is same to all,” said Dsouza.
